Restaurant chairs: what matters when you order eighty

Where venue chairs fail first, why you need spares in the first order, and how to budget correctly per chair.

Restaurant chairs: what matters when you order eighty

In a home, a chair is used a few times a day by the same four people. In a restaurant, the same chair is pulled, pushed, tipped and stacked several hundred times a week by people with no reason to be careful with it. They are two different products, even if they look identical in a photograph.

Where a venue chair fails first

Almost always in the same place: the joint between the rear legs and the seat. When someone leans back on two legs, all the force concentrates there. That is why, on models intended for commercial spaces, we add double stretchers between the rear legs and increase the timber section in that area. The cost difference is a few per cent; the difference in service life is years.

Fabric is not chosen from the domestic catalogue

For HoReCa we start at 40,000 Martindale cycles, with stain treatment, and in many cases with flame-retardant certification — which in several European countries is mandatory under fire safety rules. It is worth verifying this before the order, not after an inspection.

Order spares in the first batch

It is the cheapest thing you can do for your venue. Three to five per cent above the order means, on eighty chairs, three or four pieces sitting in storage. When one breaks on a Saturday night you replace it immediately, instead of waiting two weeks of production with a table out of service. On top of that, the fabric batch may change within two years, and the tone will no longer match.

Calculate the cost per year, not per piece

A chair at 1,300 MDL replaced every two years costs 650 a year. One at 1,900 MDL that lasts six years costs 317. The honest comparison also includes the reputational cost of a room where half the chairs look worn after a year.

Ask for staged delivery if you open in phases

If the fit-out is not finished, furniture delivered too early sits in packaging, gets scratched and takes up the contractors' space. A manufacturer that works seriously with HoReCa will agree a delivery schedule in two or three batches, tied to the state of the site.

Check what happens after delivery

Ask directly: who repairs a broken chair a year from now, and how fast? If the answer is "it goes back to the supplier", budget two weeks minimum. If production is local, the repair takes two or three days, and in many cases can be done on site.
